From farm to market
the role of the Aggregation Hubs
Mosul, tomato farmers faced a severe crisis in 2020 as plummeting prices forced them to discard tons of tomatoes by the roadside. Many farmers said they would rather throw away their produce than sell it for less than 100 dinars ($0.084) per kilo. In response, ITC through the EU-funded SAAVI project introduced a sustainable solution: forming farmers’ groups known as SAAVI Agribusiness Alliances. This market-driven approach helped improving production techniques, enhancing packaging, and connecting farmers with reliable buyers.
A cornerstone of this effort is the establishment of aggregation hubs, which serve as vital centresfor local farmers. These hubs provide dedicated spaces for sorting, packaging, and enhancing the quality of their products. By connecting small-scale farmers to efficient supply networks, aggregation hubs ensure that every “By Iraqi Hands” product is not only authentic but also meets the highest quality standards. Currently, three aggregation hubs are operational in Al-Quba, Telkazaf, and Fayda.
Aggregation hubs were developed by ITC in collaboration with NRC, WFP, UNHCR, and the Department of Agriculture of Iraq. These hubs are designed to boost the competitiveness of local farmers, minimize inefficiencies, and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

Supporting local products
Beyond immediate gains, aggregation hubs play a crucial role in shaping the future of Iraqi agriculture. By offering training, promoting sustainable farming practices, and fostering innovation, these hubs contribute to a resilient and thriving local food system. For consumers, choosing a “By Iraqi Hands” product means more than enjoying a quality item—it shows theirsupport to local growers, preserving Iraq’s agricultural legacy, and savouring produce that is genuinely grown, prepared, and delivered by Iraqi hands.
Aggregation Hub services
At the heart of each Aggregation Hub is a dedicated team and set of facilities working to maintain excellence at every step. Fresh harvests are carefully inspected, cleaned, graded, and packed under strict quality conditions. Advanced cooling systems, hygienic storage areas, and proper packaging methods are put in place to ensure that your product stays flavorful and safe from the moment it leaves the farm until it reaches your shopping cart. The result is a shorter, more reliable path to the store shelf, guaranteeing a fresher taste and a more authentic experience.
Connecting farmers to markets
One of the greatest advantages of aggregation hubs is their role as a bridge between hardworking local farmers and trusted retailers, both at home and abroad. By making it easier and more efficient to bring high-quality Iraqi produce into the market, these hubs ensure that you have access to the best local goods. This streamlined connection means fewer intermediaries, fairer prices for everyone, and a chance for local businesses to thrive. Ultimately, it helps bring you closer to the very farmers who grew the products you are enjoying.
Benefits for farmers
Behind each delicious “By Iraqi Hands” product lies the dedication of SAAVI Agribusiness Alliances farmers, who invest care and effort into every seed they plant and every crop they harvest. Aggregation hubs provide these farmers with essential tools, knowledge, and support—ranging from advanced harvesting techniques and improved storage solutions to a better understanding of customer needs. These resources enable farmers to increase their incomes, expand their businesses, and uphold the rich authenticity and heritage of Iraqi agriculture in every product.
